Homearama, developer's dream for boyhood playground

A few decades ago, a parcel of land in the heart of Chesapeake's Deep Creek was Tim Culpepper's childhood playground.

As a young boy, he explored the area that butted up against the Great Dismal Swamp. He spen t his summers hunting, fishing, camping and riding his bike through some of the 488 acres that his family owned.

"In the summer, we would pick watermelons and cantaloupe to sell," said Culpepper, who graduated from Deep Creek High School in 1989. "It seemed like there was always something to do on the farm."

Chesapeake housing development a draw for bargain buyers

Tucked away about two miles south of Interstate 64 in Deep Creek, developers have begun work on a community aimed at the current sweet spot of the new homes market: price-conscious buyers.

Culpepper Landing, a 488-acre project of Robinson Development Group between the edges of the Great Dismal Swamp and its canal, has homes with prices that start at about $234,000 for a 1,400-square-foot rowhouse and go up to a little more than $500,000.

The strategy seems to be working. So far this year sales and interest have been strong at the community, said Tim Culpepper, vice president of Robinson Development.

MARK AND DEANNA Butler always envisioned living in a community where neighbors knew neighbors, amenities were within walking distance and beauty surrounded them.

They believe they've found that at Culpepper Landing, a transitional neighborhood development under construction in Chesapeake.

The Deep Creek community is adjacent to the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Preserve, the Intracoastal Waterway and a 160-acre preservation area.
